Did Reddit’s April Fool’s gag solve the issue of online hate speech?

It definitely provides a lot of food for thought. Basically, the idea that you only can add your stuff to a site’s content if you already were registered before the very content went online sounds quite promising…

Although, I assume customizing an automated approach will never fail to game the system, no matter how elaborate it might appear.

To the Cosmopolitan editors who offered cancer as diet advice.

This week, Cosmopolitan published a story about beating cancer. Their title: “How This Woman Lost 44 Pounds Without ANY Exercise.”

The United Story Isn’t About Customer Service. It’s About Class Warfare.

When you get down to it, like everything else in America today, this is about the haves and the have-nots. If you’re in first class, you don’t need to worry about shock troops coming and beating you until you get out of the seat that you bought. If you’re not in first class, you’re on your own. If you’re in the top one percent on Wall Street, you turn a tidy profit off the whole ordeal. This is what class warfare looks like.

Scientists Announce That The Great Barrier Reef is Officially “Terminal”.

The Great Barrier Reef in Australia is recognized as the biggest living structure on Earth. Unfortunately, it's dying—with many portions facing no hope for recovery—thanks to back to back mass bleaching events.

Scuttlebutt is slang for gossip, particularly among sailors. It is also the name of a peer-to-peer system ideal for social graphs, identity and messaging.

Secure Scuttlebutt is also different to federated social networks like Mastodon, Diaspora, GNU social, OStatus. Those technologies are not peer-to-peer, because each component is either a server or a client, but not both. Federated social networks are slightly better than centralized services like Facebook because they provide some degree of choice where your data should be hosted. However, there is still trust and dependency on third-party servers and ISPs, which makes it possible for admistrators of those to abuse their power, through content policies, privacy violations or censorship.

Exzellente Entqualifizierung: Das neue akademische Prekariat.

The Case Against Eating Fish.

You might even be eating fish you didn’t know you had a sensitivity to. For example, escolar, often called “white tuna” on sushi menus, is a snake mackerel that’s routinely substituted for many different fish. While escolar’s oily texture is appealing to some taste buds, it can also be indigestible, causing severe diarrhea and cramping. (…) I wondered whether restaurant menus need new symbols along the lines of the ones that identify gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan items—symbols that declare fish to be “species verified” or “plastic free.”
