How to Break Up the Silicon Valley Boys’ Club.

Names that Make Computers Go Crazy.

Take for example the story of Stephen O, a South Korean living in Virginia, who had several credit card applications rejected because the local banking systems could not record a single-letter last name. He was only able to get a driving license under the surname OO, then had trouble getting car insurance because the credit agency couldn't match his records. The credit bureau computers knew him as Ostephen, presumingly 'upgrading' the name from Korean to Irish. In one database, after a lengthy search, they found him as blank-blank-O. He finally gave up fighting computers and changed his name to Oh. Mr Oh didn't have a choice but to surrender to binary logic.

Why Evolution Is Ageist.

Nature doesn’t give a damn about us after we make our babies. Natural selection is pretty much gone around age 40—and that’s where aging begins.

Why do people swear?

It doesn't matter that it's a swear word. Imagine meeting someone who has a fear of crisps, and who finds references to crisps traumatic. If you carry on talking about crisps in their presence, even after discovering about their phobia, you are sending a signal that you don't respect them, you don't have any concern for their feelings.

If Your iPhone is Stolen, These Guys May Try to iPhish You.

Victims of iPhone theft can use the Find My iPhone feature to remotely locate, lock or erase their iPhone — just by visiting Apple’s site and entering their iCloud username and password. Likewise, an iPhone thief can use those iCloud credentials to remotely unlock the victim’s stolen iPhone, wipe the device, and resell it. As a result, iPhone thieves often subcontract the theft of those credentials to third-party iCloud phishing services. This story is about one of those services.

The Dutch Donald Trump wasn’t stopped, he was copied.

In 1996, a Dutch judge sentenced the extreme-right politician Hans Janmaat for saying “As soon as we have the power and the opportunity, we will eliminate multiculturalism.” Pretty tame compared to Wilders, who’s constantly denouncing “palaces of hatred” (mosques) and “street terrorists” (Moroccan youth). At the start of his campaign, current prime minister Mark Rutte of the VVD said he hates the term “multiculturalism.” Rutte hasn’t prevailed over the populist right; he’s joined its ranks.

Escape to another world.

A life spent buried in video games, scraping by on meagre pay from irregular work or dependent on others, might seem empty and sad. Whether it is emptier and sadder than one spent buried in finance, accumulating points during long hours at the office while neglecting other aspects of life, is a matter of perspective.
