cacert.org provides server and e-mail certificates on an (almost) free basis "due to the growing popularity of using this method for authentication, and a growing concern about existing certificate authoritites (ca) starting to charge excessively, and increasing on a yearly basis, as well as extremely serious breaches of security in the past".
