I wish I only had a glimpse of how Mike Bostock comes up with the formulas for something like this Epicyclic Gearing thingie…

It’s all about math, trigonometry and shitake (and SVG of course), I know, but still: how long does it take to find out how to describe not only one gear but three different gears with a few lines of code and some sine and cosine calculations?
